Information about small arts organizations is essential to the blueprint of the Ohio Arts Council's State of the Arts Report. Because small arts organizations face different issues and concerns than larger arts institutions, specific methods and questions were developed to locate and collect data on these organizations. Due to the uncertainty of the number and makeup of small arts organizations, a comprehensive process for locating small arts organizations was developed.
Small arts organizations such as small watercolor societies, chamber music ensembles and quilting groups often go uncounted and are not represented in studies similar to the Ohio Arts Council's State of the Arts Report. In order to get a true picture of the number and makeup of small arts organizations throughout Ohio, focus groups were chosen as the method for data collection.
An extensive directory of over four hundred small arts organizations searchable by geographic region and specific art discipline was created. The directory is representative of the number of small arts organizations in Ohio and a valid sample of those organizations.
