K-12 Public and Private Schools

Key Findings

  • High schools have more money budgeted for the arts than elementary and middle schools. Schools with large student populations have greater arts programming budgets than less populated schools.
  • Public schools appropriate more of the total arts budget for supplies, while private schools appropriate more of the arts budget for art teachers.
  • The most common field trips are outings to plays. Elementary school students are more likely to be given opportunities to visit museums of natural history, historical societies and zoos than higher grade levels. High school students are more likely to be offered opportunities to visit art galleries and museums.
  • The majority of schools with 800 or more students (94%) provide at least one extracurricular music program, and 57% of these schools offer three or more music programs. Only 6% of schools with less than 300 students provide three or more extracurricular music programs.
  • Schools tend to partner with other organizations to provide arts opportunities for students. The most common partnerships (56%) are with parent-teacher organizations, particularly at the elementary level to assist with fundraising. Other partnerships include: hosting visiting artists; offering field trips to museums and galleries; working with local arts councils for student scholarships and grants; and organizing student exhibitions. 61% do not partner with nonprofit arts and cultural organizations.
  • The majority of schools (76%) market student arts performances to the public as well as to students and parents. The majority of schools (81%) market student exhibitions to the public as well as to students and parents.
