Rhode Island Foundation for the Arts - Economic Impact of the Arts on Rhode Island
| Date |
1997 |
| Purpose of Study |
The overall purpose of the report was to establish that the arts and cultural organizations are a viable sector of Rhode Island's economy. In addition, the report calls for a "collective responsibility" among "government, civic leaders, funders and corporations who are concerned about economic and community development," in supporting arts and cultural organizations. |
| Methodology |
Surveys given to the arts and cultural organizations; information submitted by the arts and cultural organizations; and information provided by the IRS. |
| Results |
- This study demonstrates that despite the decrease in funding, positive outcomes exist for the arts organizations in the state of Rhode Island. Arts organizations are becoming more resourceful and looking elsewhere for support.
- Total economic impact of $241.2 million in 1995-96: 11, 687 jobs, of which 2,276 were full-time; 6,000,009 admissions to its events, or about six times the population of the entire state.
- Received $160.4 million income, of which $97.7 million was earned, $20 million was from foundation, corporate and individual donations, $26.5 million was from federal, state and local government donations, and $22.2 million was interest and transfers from endowments.

| Assessments |
-
Not clear from the study if the 40 organizations that completed the survey were the only organizations that received the survey or that only 40 of the 1,004 arts and cultural organizations that received the survey, completed it. If it is the latter, this is a small sample, considering the size of the universe.
- This study does not include the indirect economic benefits such as audience spending on restaurants, parking and hotels.
- Example of economic indicator in terms of admissions. The study includes an aggregate number of admissions.
