The Economic Impact of the Arts on New York City and New York State
| Date |
1997 |
| Purpose of Study |
The purpose of the study is to provide a detailed economic impact of the arts on New York City and the state of New York with the links to particular industries fashion, publishing, advertising and tourism. |
| Methodology |
Two archival studies: 1983 and 1993, prepared by the Alliance for the Arts and the Port of Authority of New York and New Jersey. The study relies on an economic input/output model, IMPLAN. |
| Results |
- The study is a true economic impact study exclusively reporting the direct and indirect benefits of the arts on New York City and New York state.
- The universe for the study was defined as:
- - Nonprofit arts organizations, other cultural organizations directly funded by the New York state Council on the Arts, plus zoos and botanical gardens.
- - Commercial art galleries and auction houses.
- - Commercial theatre.
- - Motion picture and television production.
|
| Assessments |
- While the executive summary presents a significant number of facts and figures pertaining to the arts and their impact on the economy, the report lacks cohesiveness. Descriptive paragraphs accompanying the facts and figures might have achieved this lack of cohesion.
- How the universe was defined: The universe included mostly cultural organizations, zoos, and botanical gardens. Although they are not art per se these organizations have a direct relationship to the arts.
