The role of for-profit arts organizations in the State of the Arts Report is complex and much is yet to be discovered about them. The three industries profiled for their unique connection to Ohio's arts and cultural environment were architectural firms, for-profit galleries and music venues. Architecture is the art of the built environment. For-profit galleries mirror nonprofit galleries. They are different in their organizational structure and focus and much can be learned from comparing how they operate. Commercial music venues often serve as a primary point of exposure to the arts.
A literature review played an integral role in determining how to study for-profit organizations for the State of the Arts Report. Other state arts councils' reports were reviewed to find out how they studied for-profit arts organizations in their state. In all the state reports about for-profit arts organizations, no state attempted to report on aggregate information on for-profit arts organizations. Instead, the majority of the reports profiled some key industries and used qualitative means to gather information. The State of the Arts Report advisory committee followed this guidance and chose to profile architectural firms, for-profit galleries and music venues. Focus groups were chosen as the method for data collection.
